HACKENSACK AREA FISHING REPORT

November 2, 2008

Though fishing has slowed down some over the last couple weeks, many fishermen are still reporting some good catches. Leech Lake is still producing Walleyes out of depths less than 10 feet. In addition to Leech Lake, Ten Mile Lake and Pleasant Lake are also producing some Walleyes in deeper water. The primary bait being used is still the jig and minnow, but trolling crank baits in shallow water has produced some fish as well.

The Walleye bite is still going strong.  Leech Lake has been very productive on a jig and minnow in 5-8 feet of water.  The Goose Island and Bear Island area have been the best.  Woman Lake and Ten Mile Lake have also been doing well.  Jig and a minnow on those lakes as well but in deeper water, 12 to18 feet.

Despite the rain the last few days, the fish bit really well.  The Goose Island area on Leech Lake remains the hottest Walleye bite around.  Fish a jig and minnow in 5-8 feet of water for the best action.  Woman Lake is also beginning to heat up now.  The 'Eyes there are in 12- 22 feet of water depending on the spot.  Bass and Northern action has been good on Ten Mile and Birch Lake.  You will find them anywhere from 3-30 feet of water so pick your favorite approach and go have some fun.

If this Fall's fishing on Leech Lake is any indication of what is to come this winter, it will be great! Walleyes are still going strong and the Perch are starting to reveal themselves.  Walleyes are still in the Grand View Flats/Goose Island area, even up to the Hardwoods.  The south end of Bear Island is also active right now, more Perch down there.  The jig and minnow approach is the most popular and productive, do not go out with out cralwers though.  I was out on Friday morning, the minnow bite slumped and nightcrawlers on a rig outfished the minnows 4 to 1 for a few hours.  Bass are active on most of the smaller lakes close to town, don't be surprised to find them as deep as 30 feet.  I caught some while Walleye fishing on Ten Mile on Wednesday, Redtails on a Jig, the Walleyes were anywhere from 8 to 30 feet.  Bass have also been reported on Birch Lake and  Webb Lake.  Fall Crappies fishing is heating up as the water cools.  Fish in 20 feet of water with a jig and fathead,  they will range from 3-6 feet off of the bottom.

JIG & MINNOW!!  Walleyes and Northern Pike are feeding very actively on a jig and minnow right now.  Leech Lake has been the #1 destination for Walleye.  The Goose Island area has benn good.  Fish in 7-12 feet of water, Gold or Blue Jigs have been working well.  Also try the Hardwoods and The Meadows in the same depths.  Ten Mile, Birch, and Woman Lakes have also been seeing some Walleye action.  Fish in 18-24 feet of water on these lakes.  Northern Pike have been very agressive on Ten Mile Lake (24"-36" slot) Redtails or Large Shiners on a jig or rig will get you plenty of Pike action.  Crappies are also feeding on a jig and minnow combo.  Most lakes the Crappies are holding in 12-14 feet of water.  Good Luck!!

The water temps are in the low 60's and cooling with every night.   Northern Pike are on a feeding frenzy, stocking up for the winter.  Redtails and Sucker minnows on a jig have been good.  Mamy fish 5 pounds and up have been caught in the last few days.  Ten Mile and Birch lake have been good (Ten Mile 24"-36" Northens must be released).  Many other lakes have produced nice Northerns as well.  Bass are also busy packing on weight for the winter.  I found Bass, Large and Small mouth on Ten Mile with a jig and Redtail in 20-30 feet of water yesterday, there were also Northern and Walleyes in that range.  Birch Lake Walleyes are feeding on Fathead minnows this week, fish in 18-24 feet of water.  Leech Lake is still the go-to spot for Walleyes.  Both Minnows and Crawlers are boating fish.  Fish 10-15 feet of water on the wind-blown structure.  Perch should be picking up pretty quickly, there have been anglers finding a few Jumbos.

The fishing seems to be getting better with every passing day.  The temps are cooling down and the fish have moved in the the fall patterns on most lakes.  The best plan of attack for the Walleyes is a jig and minnow, Redtails and fatheads hae both been doing well.  The Hardwoods and Meadows area on Leech Lake is where we have been hearing the most action.  10-14 feet of water is a good starting point.  The Perch are beginning to bite better, still mostly small fish with a few nice ones mixed in.  It will not be long until they really get going.  Bass are still biting very well.  Fishing the lillypads with topwater baits or a spinnerbait has been productive.  Pleasant Lake and Birch Lake have been good.  Ten Mile Lake can alos bee a great Fall Bass Lake, remember that all SMALL MOUTH BASS MUST BE RELASED ON ALL LAKES UNTIL THE BASS SEASON REOPENS NEXT SPRING.  There has been better Muskie action in the past week than there was all summer.  There were plenty of Muskies caught during the Muskie Mania Tournament last weekend.  Leech Lake produced a number of fish in the 50"+, the smaller lakes close to Hackensack saw some decent action as well.

Good Luck, remember to send us your fishin' photos!!
