Ice Fishing Report, December 5th, 2018

Posted by

We're seeing many more ice anglers now than we were a week ago. Most area lakes have ice thicknesses between 4 and 10 inches allowing at least foot traffic out there. Some of the lakes that froze earlier are seeing ATVs, but ice is still very inconsistent so be sure to check thickness often!

Fishing has been pretty good for walleye and panfish across the area. Most of the walleye reports have been coming off the main lake on Leech, but some of the smaller area lakes have been putting some fish out as well. Reports have been alternating between rainbows and shiners in 17'-24' depending on lake. Be sure to have a deadstick, bobber, or tip-up down because it does seem like some nights they shy away from the jigging.

Bluegill have been doing well mid morning and during the afternoon on a handful of lakes. Most reports have come from Birch, but some of the little pot hole lakes have been pretty hot. Crappie have pretty much strictly been an evening bite, but the bite has been pretty consistent. Reports have been primarily out of Stony and Birch Lake.

We haven't heard much from the guys in the spearhouses, but a handful of groups heading out tip-ups in hand have had some fun mornings on the ice chasing flags for Pike. Big shiners and smaller suckers have been great. The first breaks off the shallow flats seem to be best.

As mentioned we're still on early ice yet, so expect inconsistent ice thickness. One spot on a lake could be 10" and 20 feet over could be just a 1-3". Use some caution, check often and you should be able to find good ice to get out!
