Fishing Report, September 3, 2018

It has been another great week of fishing! Bass fishing continues to be fantastic for smallmouth and largemouth both. The calm waters over the weekend provided some great smallmouth sight fishing opportunities on Woman, Stony, Portage, and Baby. Lightweight, slower falling jigs are great in these situations - get the jig well out in front of the fish and let the slow fall do its work. If fish are slow to bite experiment with color and rate of fall to find the winning combination.

Largemouth have been stacked in the pads, and they've been feeding aggressively. Don't be surprised if you plop a frog in a bank of pads and see a wake from a fish coming from 10+ feet away to pound the frog. If fish are a little slow, switch over to a jig and pull through the pads the same as you would a frog, but slow and pause it in the pockets to get less aggressive fish to play ball.

Muskie fishing has been very good as well. Overall it is a little slower than during the full moon, but fishing is still going pretty strong. Bigger fish have been on the move, and the bigger baits are starting to pay. Don't be afraid to fish your baits fast at times - we converted many fish from lazy followers to hot fish chasing through figure 8's with a gradual speed increase during the retrieves.

Walleye fishing has been surprisingly good as well. Though techniques are what you would expect for late August, fish have been in better numbers and more concentrated than you would expect. We've done well focusing on shallow flats with good perch/forage and throwing shallow running cranks after dark. There are defintely some fish pockets as well you can target with the jig, or a slow rig with a big minnow.
