Fishing opener 2019 was an interesting one! Overall water temps have really come up from what we were anticipating, and fishing was very comparable to normal openers. Walleye in general were pretty shallow, and it seemed like the guys pitching lighter jigs/minnows were doing best. Fish seemed to be a little finicky so getting out from the boat with a lighter setup paid off. Also some anglers had success rigging shallow instead of jigging. Minnows were king as usual for opening weekend, but we heard reports of both leeches and crawlers working well. Also those pitching cranks in the shallows during the early morning and late evening did well.
Leech Lake put out some great fishing this weekend, but it took a little bit to dial in on them. Those that figured it out did very well. Most of the other area lakes like Pine Mountain, Ten Mile, Woman, Baby, and Little Boy did pretty well. Water in that 12-18' was best, but in different times of the day you could find them shallower. It was definitely a finesse type of weekend, but the fish were biting and many anglers did well.
Crappie fishing is firing up now with water temps getting where they need to be. Many more reports of shallow fish coming in. Some anglers over the weekend mixed it up and chased slabs over the weekend, and they were not disappointed! The crappie fishing should continue to be good for a while here, and the walleye should heat up as well.
Overall it was a great weekend despite some of the bait shortages around. It is good to see everyone back on the water!
