Fishing Report, July 23, 2018

Posted by

We've had a lot of fronts move through in the last couple weeks, and the fishing has been very day to day it seems depending on the front activity. There was definitely some great fishing this week, but there were some slow days mixed in. Walleye fishing is decent with a strong morning bite, but during the day pulling spinners over the deep flats is the way to go. The morning bite tends to be jigs and leeches, and sometimes they're finding fish shallow around the cabbage.

Muskie fishing is really getting heated up now. Bucktails are producing very well, but it is mostly about covering water right now. Fish are very active on Leech and some of the smaller lakes like Baby and Little Boy have been pretty good too. Right now the reports are pretty much split between weeds and rocks.

Largemouth have been stacked up in the weeds during the day. Find some weedless lures and heavy line and get in there! We've been finding fish very shallow water just waiting for frogs to drop in from the bank. During the early morning and later hours they will pull out to the edges too, but focus on the pads and any shade you can find during the day.

Smallmouth have been smacking topwater pretty good now. Swim baits have been working well too, but we've been hearing the best reports on crankbaits and crayfish imitations. Early mornings bring the fish up shallow, but during the day get on the deep edges and humps. Drop shot can be a great way to get them if they're holding a tight spot.

Crappie have been a little slower this week, but you can definitely get them dragging small plastics through the cabbage beds. They seem to have moved a little deeper, and they slide back up the edge during the evenings. Crappie minnows/bobbers work, but it is better to be covering ground right now.
