Ice Fishing Report, February 11, 2019

It has been very rough on the ice fishing front with all the snow we've been getting. The combined weight has created more slush issues since our last cold snap. Between the slush, deep snow, and drifts it has been very difficult to get around off any plowed roads. Snowmobiles are the best bet, but if you get into slush pockets you'll still have trouble. At this point we need some warm sunshine to settle the snow down so it has a chance to freeze solid, or just start melting all-together.

Fishing has been decent if you're able to get out, but the limited mobility really inhibits the fishing opportunities because you can't jump around and find active fish. Most angles are cruising out to their fish houses at dusk to capitalize on the evening crappie or walleye bite. Bites have been better/worse night to night with all these fronts moving through, but there are definitely some good feeding windows if you put in the time.

Our recommendation is stick to lakes that have maintained roads to avoid the headache of getting out on your own. Leech primarily has been the best bet for getting out, but a handful of area lakes do have roads out too, but with the snow, and drifting wind that can change day to day if they aren't getting opened up regularly.

Ice Fishing Report, February 5, 2019

We made it through the deep freeze last week and were rewarded with warmer temps over the weekend. The fishing had been a little slow during the cold snap weather pattern, and they've been slow to recover. Still some fish going, but we need some consistent weather. Right now we are having fronts and weather [...]

Ice Fishing Report, January 29, 2019

It was awfully cold last week, but we were surprised by the number of anglers headed out for the weekend. Golden Shiners and rainbows have been the go to. Most anglers were headed to Leech Lake, Red Lake, and Lake of the Woods - it was a wheel house kind of weekend. Leech lake produced a [...]

Ice Fishing Report, January 22, 2019

It's had been starting to get a little easier to get around on the lakes in the last few days with this colder weather. A lot of the slush pockets were getting frozen through, and we were seeing more and more ATVs getting around on the ice again. There still may be a few slush [...]

Ice Fishing Report, January 14, 2019

We had a pretty good fishing weekend in the area despite the tough travel conditions on the lakes. We're seeing slush on most of the lakes. Slush in combination with the deeper snow has made it difficult without a snowmobile. However, we're seeing some of the lakes starting to freeze through, and if we get [...]

Ice Fishing Report, January 7, 2019

We've had everything thrown at us over the last couple weeks in regards to the weather. We've had cold, we've had a warm snap, we've had snow, and we've had rain. The water has come up on most lakes and created some slushy situations, but the snow has settled quite a bit which helps. We [...]

Ice Fishing Report, December 24th, 2018

Warmer weather threw everything for a loop this last week! Ice conditions stayed pretty stagnant and didn't make much for new ice, and the freeze/thaw cycling created some issues on some of the lakes. Overall though, we didn't go backwards, and a little cooler weather here will get us back on track. Also, the weather [...]

Ice Fishing Report, December 17th, 2018

Fishing has been very good across the area this last week. Ice thickness has been solid enough on most lakes to get out and fish where you want to. We're seeing more and more wheelers and houses on the ice, but it is still early so check the ice the whole way out!Night to night [...]

Ice Fishing Report, December 10th, 2018

The lakes have been singing with the sound of ice making the last week! Most area lakes have 5 to 10 inches of ice right now - lots of variation as you would expect early season. Ten Mile and Walker Bay have been holding onto some patches of open water. Overall, foot traffic and wheeler/snowmobiles [...]

Ice Fishing Report, December 5th, 2018

We're seeing many more ice anglers now than we were a week ago. Most area lakes have ice thicknesses between 4 and 10 inches allowing at least foot traffic out there. Some of the lakes that froze earlier are seeing ATVs, but ice is still very inconsistent so be sure to check thickness often!Fishing has [...]
